Broom is a small- to medium-sized shrub with evergreen foliage that grow quickly in a bushy habit. Leaves are green and small, usually lanceolate. It bears profusions of pretty pea-like flowers in shades of yellow that attract a wide range of pollinators. Broom grows really really well on poor soils - sandy, stoney, wasteland etc but dislikes wet/boggy conditions.

Germination Guide
- Broom seeds have a very hard, water-impermeable seed coat that requires some pretreatment for successful germination to occur
- Easiest method is the "hot water" method:
- Place the seeds in a cup and pour hot, but not boiling water 75-85c over them. Leave to soak for 8 hours or so.
- Note the seeds that have almost tripled in size and remove these to plant up. Repeat the process for the remaining unswollen seeds making the water a little hotter each time
- Sow in pots or seed trays of good quality compost at a depth of about 2cm
- Germination takes circa 4 weeks at 15-20°c.
- Broom dislikes root distrubance so pot onto individual pots as soon as seedlings large enough to prick out
- Plant them out into their permanent positions in late summer if they have made sufficient growth, otherwise in late spring of the following year.
